동양철학과 BK21플러스 사업단(단장 신정근)에서는 11월 25일(월) 4시 30분 미국 델라웨어 대학교(University of Delaware) 철학과의 Hsin-wen Lee(李心文)교수님의 초청강연을 개최합니다. 

Hsin-wen Lee 교수님은 대만 국립중정대학(國立中正大學) 철학과에서 석사학위를 하시고 미국 University of Southern California에서 박사학위를 받으셨습니다.  Hsin-wen Lee 교수님의 전문분야는 영미 분석철학으로 민족주의에 대해 주로 연구해 오셨고 최근에는 형벌에 관한 법철학 이론을 연구하고 계십니다. 주요 연구로는 “The Identity Argument for National Self-Determinism" (Public Affairs Quarterly, 2012),  "Institutional Morality and the Principle of National Self-Determination" (Philosophical Studies, 2015), "A New Societal Self-Defense Theory of Punishment" (Philsophia, 2018) 등이 있습니다. 최근에 유교 쪽으로 연구영역을 확장하여 유교가 현재 영미권 형벌 이론 및 형사처벌정책 등에 어떤 새로운 시각을 제시할 수 있는지를 연구하고 계십니다. 이번 강연에서는 이 내용을 소개하려고 합니다. 
이번 강연은 영어로 진행되지만 이용윤 선생님께서 통역을 맡아 주실 예정입니다.

▣ 강연영문초록
A deterrence theory of punishment holds that the institution of criminal punishment is morally justified because it serves to deter crime. Because the fear of external sanction is an important incentive in crime deterrence, the deterrence theory is often associated with the idea of severe, disproportionate punishment. An objection to this theory holds that hope of escape renders even the severest punishment inapt and irrelevant. In this talk, I revisit the concept of deterrence and defend a more plausible deterrence theory of punishment – the Wide-Scope Deterrence Theory. The Wide-Scope Theory holds that we must make the best use of all the deterrence tools available, including both external and internal sanctions. Drawing on insights from the early Confucian tradition, I develop a Deep Deterrence Theory, which holds that the most important deterrence tool involves internal, not external, sanction. I describe how internal sanctions deter potential offences and why relevant policies need not conflict with liberalism’s respect for neutrality.
