1. 자기소개 (Self-introduction)

 나는 터키에서 온 Gokce Basbug이다. 터키에서 심리학을 처음 공부했고, 그 후 박사 학위를 받기 위해 미국으로 갔다. 나는 MIT 슬론 경영대학원에서 박사학위를 받았으며, 직업과 취업에 관련된 문제를 공부하고 있다.

 나의 취미는 축구이다. 나는 5살 때부터 축구를 했다. 이곳, 서울에서 나는 서울스포츠소셜의 회원이다. 나는 이 그룹의 친구들과 규칙적으로 논다. 그 모임의 일부가 되어 매우 행복하다. 우리는 축구 경기를 함께 하기도 하고 정기적으로 만나서 술을 마시기도 한다.

 내가 태어난 터키는 조금 뻔한 정의지만 유럽과 아시아를 잇는 다리라고 정의할 수 있다. 두 대륙 사이에 위치할 뿐만 아니라 양 대륙의 문화를 모두 보유하고 있으며, 이를 결합하여 독자적인 문화를 만들고 있다. 터키의 서울은 가장 인구가 많고 터키의 중심이라고 할 수 있는 이스탄불이다. 이스탄불은 기원전 5000년으로 거슬러 올라가는 장구한 역사적 배경을 가지고 있다. 세계 여러 도시를 볼 기회가 있었던 사람으로서, 이스탄불은 가장 아름다운 도시 중 하나라고 말할 수 있다.

 My name is Gokce Basbug. I am from Turkey. For my education, I first studied psychology in Turkey, and then I went to the United States for my PhD degree. I received my PhD from MIT Sloan School of Management. I study work and employment issues.

 My main hobby is playing soccer. I’ve been playing soccer since I was five years old. Here, in Seoul, I’m a member of Seoul Sports Social. I play regularly with my friends from this group. I am very happy to be part of it. We not only play soccer but also meet regularly for drinks.

 It is a cliché but real. Turkey can be defined as a bridge between Europe and Asia. It is not only located between these two continents but also it possesses cultural ingredients from both continents, combines them and produces a unique culture of its own. The Seoul of Turkey is Istanbul, which is the most populous city and the heart of the country. Istanbul has a huge historical background going back to 5000 BC. As a person who has had the chance to see many cities around the world, I can say Istanbul is one of the most beautiful ones.

2. 한국에서의 삶 (Life in Korea)

1) 한국에 오게 된 계기 (What made you came to Korea?)

 나는 교수로서 일하기 위해 한국에 왔다. 박사과정을 졸업하고 전 세계 조교수 자리에 지원했는데 SKK GSB(성균관대학교 경영대학원)로부터 제의를 받은 것은 매우 행운이라고 생각한다. 나는 한국이 내가 살고 일할 수 있는 최고의 장소라고 생각한다. 우선 한국 문화는 집단주의라는 측면에서 터키 문화와 비슷하다. 한국인들은 사회적 유대관계와 긴밀한 관계에 신경을 쓴다. 그들은 친구들과 시간을 보내고 터키 사람들처럼 친구들과 술을 마시고 시간을 즐긴다. 내가 보스턴에서 박사학위를 위해 공부할 때 나의 가장 친한 친구들은 한국인이었다. 그들은 또한 정보와 자원을 제공함으로써 내가 이곳에서 적응하는 데 많은 도움을 주었다.

 I came to Korea for my first academic job. When I graduated from my PhD program, I applied for Assistant Professor positions around the world and I feel now I am very lucky that I received an offer from SKK GSB. I believe Korea is the best place I can live and work. First of all, Korean culture is similar to Turkish culture in terms of collectivism. Koreans care about social ties and close relationships. They spend time with friends, and drink and enjoy time with them like Turkish people do. When I was a PhD student in Boston, my best friends were Korean. They also helped me a lot for adjusting here by providing information and resources.

2) 한국의 첫인상 (What was your first impression of Korea?)

 취업 상담을 위해 찾아갔을 때 처음 느낀 감정은 집처럼 편안하다는 것이었다. 거리에 있는 사람들, 그들의 태도와 행동, 거리와 건물의 디자인은 마치 집에 있는 듯한 느낌을 주었다. 이야기를 마치고 보스턴으로 돌아갔을 때 아내에게 제일 먼저 한 말은 우리가 한국에서 살게 되면 집에 있는 것처럼 마음이 편안해질 것이라는 말이었다. 그리고 실제로도 그랬다. 그녀는 여기서 정말 즐겁게 지내고 있다. 그녀는 SKKU의 한국어 프로그램에 참석했다. 그 프로그램 덕분에, 이제 그녀는 한국어로 쉽게 의사소통을 할 수 있고 가끔 내가 상황을 파악하는 것을 도와준다.

 My first feeling when I visited for the job talk was feeling like at home. People on the street, their attitudes and behaviors, the design of streets and buildings made me feel like I was at home. When I went back to Boston after the talk, the first thing I told my wife was that she would feel at home if we end up living in Korea. And now it turns out that I was true. She is really enjoying here. She attended SKKU’s Korean Language Program. Thanks to the program, now she can easily communicate in Korean and help me figure things out sometimes.

3) 한국에서 기억에 남는 장소 (Where is the most memorable place in Korea?)

 나는 아내와 함께 제주를 방문했다. 정말 좋은 경험이었다. 우리는 조용한 곳을 좋아해서 겨울 방학 때 제주를 갔었다. 우리는 산책을 하고, 해산물도 많이 먹고, 하이킹을 했다. 우리는 정말 즐거웠고 다시 방문하기를 고대하고 있다.

 I visited Jeju with my wife. It was a great experience. We like quiet places, so we decided to visit during the Winter break. We walked around, ate a lot of seafood, and did some hiking. We really enjoyed it and we are looking forward to visiting again.

4) 한국 생활의 힘든 점 (What is hard for you at Korea?)

 가끔 한국말 때문에 힘들 때가 있다. 바디 랭귀지를 사용하여 사람들과 쉽게 교류할 수 있기 때문에 거리나 가게, 식당에서 사람들과 의사소통 하는데 아무런 문제가 없다. 하지만 가끔 은행이나 병원에서 할 일이 있을 때, 서로를 이해하기가 어려워질 때가 있다.

 Sometimes Korean. I don’t have any problem communicating with people on the street, in a shop, or at a restaurant. You can easily interact with people using your body language. But, sometimes, when I have some work to do at a bank or at a hospital, it sometimes becomes difficult to understand each other.

3. 성균관대학교에서의 삶 (Life at SKKU)

1) 성균관대학교에 오게 된 계기 (What made you came to SKKU?)

 박사과정을 공부할 때 만난 친구 중 졸업 후에 성균관대학교에서 조교수직을 맡은 친구가 있었다. 그는 나에게 이곳이 교직원으로 일하기에 얼마나 대단한 곳인지 말해주었다. 학교는 교수들에게 매우 중요한, 우리의 연구에 집중할 수 있는 자원과 인프라를 제공한다.

 I had a friend from my PhD program who took an Assistant Professor position at SKKU after graduation. He told me how great this place is to work as a junior faculty. The school provides us resources and infrastructure to focus on our research, which is very important for junior faculty.

2) 성균관대학교에서 있었던 기억에 남는 일 (Can you pick one memorable event in your SKKU life?)

 가장 기억에 남는 일은 1학기를 마친 후 내가 처음으로 가르친 학생들이 나와 내 수업에 대해 쓴 피드백을 읽었을 때이다. 이제 막 첫 교직 경험을 마친 조교수로서 제자들의 그런 말들은 나에게 큰 선물이었다. 나는 아직도 그 때를 생각하면 감정이 북받쳐 오른다. 

 My most memorable event was when I finished my first semester of teaching and read my first students’ feedback about me and the class. As a junior professor who just completed his first teaching experience, those words of my students were big gifts to me. I still get emotional when I remember that.

3) 교육 철학 (What is your philosophy of education?)

 나에게 교육이란 함께 발견하고 배우는 과정이다. 나는 선생님은 일방적으로 지식을 주입하고 학생은 일방적으로 지식을 받아들여야 한다는 생각을 믿지 않는다. 나는 이런 접근 방식이 대학원에 맞지 않는다고 생각한다. 석사과정이나 박사과정 같은 대학원 과정은 교사와 학생이 함께 지식을 생산해야 하는 곳이다. 그러므로 나는 정말로 내 학생들이 지식의 소비자에서 지식의 생산자로 변화하고 지식 창조 과정의 일부가 되기를 기대한다.

 To me, education is a process of discovering and learning together. I don’t believe in the idea that the teacher is the sole giver and the student is the sole receiver. I think this approach does not fit into a graduate school. Graduate programs such as Master’s or PhD programs are places where teachers and students need to produce knowledge together. Therefore, I really expect my students to transform from being a consumer of knowledge to a producer of knowledge and to be part of the knowledge creation process.

4. 미래를 위한 계획 (Future Plan)

 이 시점에서, 내 경력에 있어 우선 순위는 학술지에 논문을 게재하는 것이다. 이것은 내가 학자로서 정체성을 쌓는 데 도움이 될 뿐만 아니라 학교의 위신과 평판에도 기여할 것이다.

 마지막으로 성균관대학교의 학생들에게,

“새로운 지식을 배우고 능력을 개발해서 가능한 한 자기 자신에게 투자하라고 충고하고 싶어요. 

지금은 여러분이 스스로 새로운 기술을 갖추어야 할 때입니다. 

졸업 후에는 직장이나 가정 문제 때문에 스스로에게 투자할 시간과 힘이 없을 수도 있어요. 

그러므로, 가능한 한 이 시간들을 최대한 활용하세요.”

 My priority in my career at this point is to publish papers in academic journals. This will not only help me build my identity as a scholar but also contribute to my school’s prestige and reputation. 

 "I can advise them to invest in themselves as much as possible by gaining new knowledge and capabilities. 

This is the time for them to furnish themselves with new skills. 

After graduation, because of work or family issues, they may not have the time and strength to invest in themselves. 

So, take advantage of these school years as much as possible.”
