Sungkyunkwan University, the First Korean University to Acquire QS 5-Star

21 June 2012

Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) participated in QS Stars Rating implemented by QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) as the first University from Korea, and successfully acquired certification as a to prating 5-Star University.

QS Stars Rating differs from existing world university ranking systems in that it examines 8 areas;  education, study, employment, infrastructure, internationalization, Industry-University Collaboration, volunteer work and rated between 1~5 stars based on the multilateral evaluation. To acquire 5-Star, the University should satisfy the given standard grade as well as the minimum threshold on 5 compulsory indexes.

With the confidence that SKKU will fulfill the indexes presented by the rating agency, SKKU participated in the QS Stars Rating as the first university from Korea. Moreover, through the 5-Star certification, SKKU obtained another objective criterion to report its competitiveness amongst world’s top universities. On top of the growth and development since Samsung’s support, SKKU is racing with multidirectional efforts to jump one step further as a global leading university since President Joon-Young Kim took office in 2011.

Currently over 100 universities across 17 countries including United States and England have participated in the QS-Star Ratings. It is expected to continue receiving support from universities as it acts as a complementary good to the existing university rating systems due to the fact that it provided universities and stakeholders with objective information in diverse perspectives while avoiding unnecessary burden from explicit rankings. Furthermore, SKKU will enhance the position of Korean higher education through the 5-Star certification.
