Prof. Duk Young Jung's Team Research Paper:

Published in ‘Chemistry A European Journal’

- Dye-sensitized Solar Cells Using Mussel Ingredients Developed

- Research Paper by Professor Duk Young Jung’s Team Published in a renowned chemistry journal

- Expected to apply elements such as Organic thin-film transistor (OTFT)

A collaborative research team including Professor Duk Young Jung (center of photo) of SungKyunKwan University (SKKU) and Principal Research Scientist Min Jae Ko of Korean Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) developed a Dye-sensitized solar cell Technology using mussel ingredient which is highly effective for health.

Mussels' great adhesive power to attach itself to a rock despite severe waves is due to thin linear adhesive pads. This pad is made up of the chemical ingredient ‘Dopa.’ The ‘Dopamin’ which is known as a neurotransmitter forms a bio-polymer called ‘Poly Dopamin’ through a macromolecule response. This material is a melanin analogous which has semiconductor electric characteristics.

Prof. Duk Young Jung commented that “it is easy to make functional group conversion by second-order reaction, thus, it is possible to control light absorption and create photo currents. These facts make it possible to apply this research to various fields like organic solar cell and Organic thin-film transistor (OTFT).” This research was lead by Prof. Duk Young Jung (co-communicate writer) and Dr. Hye Jin Nam (the first writer, left in photo) of SKKU and Dr. Min Jae Ko of KIST (co-communicate writer), and the results of this study has been published in the selected high-light research section of the ‘Chemistry A European Journal’, which is a prominent journal in the field of chemistry.
