Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) is dispatching 3 students each semester in accordance to the ‘Student Exchange MOU’ signed in 2005 with North Park University (NPU). 30 SKKU students have studied in NPU, attending lectures with credit recognition. In 2012, a 5 weeks summer English as a Second Language (ELS) program was established and 23 students completed the course.

Last July, Dean Sukwon Oh of GSCS and Director Jungseok Lee of College of Liberal Arts Office visited NPU to meet with interested parties to discuss ways of expanding student exchange and encourage students.

Meanwhile, SKKU faculty’s visit to NPU gained the attention of local Americans and overseas Koreans, as it indicated great interest in exchanges between the two universities. Woongjin Park, a reporter of Chicago Hankook Ilbo, gave a major coverage to this conference with photographs: he forecasted that these two universities will extend ESL from 5 weeks to 10 weeks and expand admitted exchange classes from English classes to Eastern philosophy classes.

Juhyun Kim, reporter of Chicago Joongang ilbo, reported that Dean Sukwon Oh had mentioned that this program is “very inspiring since these two universities can cooperate and improve not only linguistic ability but also nurturing human resources who have global leadership to lead the ideas of for the future”

Furthermore, Dean Sukwon Oh made an appearance on the ‘Chicago Radio Korea 1330 Invitation’ and explained SKKU’s history and blueprint of the future, defined the meaning of ESL and revealed future plans to increase exchange programs. Moreover, Director Jungseok Lee commented that ‘the International Summer School’ is a representation of SKKU as a global leading university, and asked active participations of Koreans living in Chicago.
