2020 Professor-Student Mentoring Program

by Student Success Center

- holding online-offline meetings for communication between professors and students in the COVID-19 situation

- making participatory culture for mentoring through voluntary re-participation of last year’s mentors (professors)

- expanding a range of participants, including foreign students and graduate students

The “2020 Student Success Professor Mentoring” was successfully conducted by the Student Success Center from November 9 (Mon) to November 27 (Fri) amid keen interest from 27 professors and 132 students.

In particular, the mentoring was very meaningful because it provided an opportunity for online and offline meetings between professors and students that were difficult to have during the COVID-19. It is also noteworthy that it created participatory culture for mentoring on campus with voluntary participation by mentors (professors) who participated last year. It has expanded mentors and mentee groups to foreign students and graduate students, and established itself as a representative mentoring program.

In the process of planning the mentoring program, the Student Success Center conducted a preliminary survey of 660 students (392 from Humanities and Social Sciences Campus, 268 Natural Sciences Campus) on mentors they would like to meet, topics of interest, and suggestions in order to reflect students’ needs more carefully and systematically. And the mentoring program was conducted based on the results.

Mentors (professors) said “It was a time to understand students’ concerns and was helpful to each other. We were happy to meet bright and passionate students and it was a precious time to look back on myself as a professor.”

Mentees (students) said “It was good that they gave us the advice on life as well as career. I had a lot of worries, but I gained confidence to pursue my dream.”

The chief of Student Success Center Sang-Hoon Bae said “The interaction between professors and students is essential for student success, and I hope that this positive mentoring culture could be formed naturally in our university. I also hope more mentors and mentees will participate in the event to create precious meeting in life.”
