쩌우 민 푹(Châu Minh Phúc) 학우는 현재 27살로 정보통신대학원 전자전기컴퓨터공학과에서 박사과정을 밟고 있다. 그는 남부 베트남 지역인 짜빈(Tra Vinh)시에서 태어났으며 어린 시절을 그곳에서 보냈다. 짜빈시는 과일과 채소들이 풍부하게 나며, 가로수길이 있는 작은 도시다. 푹은 공학공부를 위해 한국에 있는 우리학교에 진학했지만 다른 활동에도 흥미를 가지고 있다. 한국에서 유학 중인 베트남 학생들을 위한 커뮤니티생활이 그것이다. 푹은 우리학교에서 베트남학생연합의 대표를 맡고 있으며, 한국에서 유학 중인 5000명이 넘는 베트남 유학생 연합의 부회장이다. 학생들을 위한 중요한 자리를 맡는다는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니다. 그가 가진 학생연합에 대한 열정은 어디에서 비롯된 걸까? 그의 캠퍼스라이프에 대해 알아보고자 한다.

푹은 자연과학캠퍼스에서 공부 중이다. 전자전기컴퓨터공학과를 선택하게 된 구체적인 이유가 무엇일까? “저는 한국에 오기 전부터 미래에 대한 목표를 뚜렷하게 생각하고 있었어요. 숫자처리속도가 빠르고 수학, 통계 분석을 잘해왔기도 하고, 특히 ‘무선통신기술’에 큰 흥미를 가지고 있었습니다. 어렸을 때 리모컨으로 장난감 자동차를 조종한다는 것이 무선통신에 대한 강렬한 첫인상을 남겼어요. 이후에도 선으로 연결되지 않은 장난감 자동차를 보면서 매우 큰 매력과 호기심을 느꼈습니다. 따라서 제가 정보통신대학원에 진학한건 자연스러운 일이죠. 제가 배우는 전공은 무선통신은 물론 차세대 통신세대를 일컫는 5G 이동통신기술에 대한 연구를 포함하고 있어요.”

푹은 전자공학을 전공하는 학생들 중에서 ‘무선통신’에 뚜렷한 흥미를 가졌던 것이다. 그가 실제 겪은 전공이 그의 흥미에 어떤 영향을 끼쳤는지 궁금했다. “저는 이 전공을 선택한 게 옳았다는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 현재 연구하는 분야들은 제게 디지털 통신과 정보 시스템 상에서 가진 과학의 아름다움을 가르쳐 주고 있어요. 통신기술이 우리네의 일상을 완전히 바꿔놨다는 것을 알면 알수록 정말 놀랍더군요. 사람들은 사회생활과 직업 생활에서 이 기술을 좀 더 쉽고, 창의적이고, 효과적으로 사용할 수 있게 된거죠.

그가 한국에 온 지 2년 반의 시간이 지났다. 2년 반의 시간동안 푹은 한국에 어느 정도 그리고 어떤 방식으로 적응했는지 궁금했다. “ 한국에서의 첫 인상은 여러 가지에요. 간단히 답하기 어렵죠. 예를 들면 서울의 대중교통, 자연이 있는 도시외곽, 한 끼에 나오는 여러 가지 반찬들 그리고 ‘빨리빨리’문화까지. 그렇지만 한국의 첫 인상을 한마디로 말하자면 ‘서비스’같아요. 한국에서 살다보면 ‘서비스’의 본뜻을 알게될겁니다. 예를 들면, 만약 당신이 식당에 대해 불만족한 부분이 있다면 식당점주에게 컴플레인을 걸어 바로 사과차원의 서비스를 받을 수 있다는 거예요. 값을 깎아주는 것들이 구체적인 예시겠죠. 그 후 저는 2년 반 대부분의 시간을 학업에 열중하고 연구를 진행하는 데 썼습니다. 그 외의 휴식시간에는 한국어를 배우거나 한국 문화를 이해하는데 보내도록 노력했죠. 한국에서 베트남학생 연합에 가입하고 활동하다보니 팀워크나 행사를 꾸릴 수 있는 소소한 능력을 키우게 됐어요. 서울에는 많은 관광명소들이 있죠. 남산타워나 남대문시장, 동대문 시장에서는 제 친구들과 많고 좋은 추억들을 남겼습니다. 4계절이 뚜렷한 나라에 사는 건 참 감탄스러워요. 한 장소에서 다른 4가지 아름다움들을 볼 수 있으니까요.”

푹은 한국을 즐길 수 있게 됐다. 그는 자국에 대한 열정도 대단한데 특별히 한국에서 대학원 진학을 결정하게 된 이유는 무엇일까? “저는 미국이나 유럽, 일본과 같은 선진국에서 유학하는 꿈을 실현하기 위해 정말 열심히 공부했었어요. 하지만 최종적으로 유학을 결정한 국가는 한국이었습니다. 모든 선진국들이 한국과 같은 인상적인 경제환경이나, 고유 스마트폰 기기, 고급 모터 브랜드 그리고 세계적으로 우수한 회사들을 가지지 않았기 때문이죠. 한국은 세계적으로 명망있는 학술지나 특허들을 가진, 지식을 선도하는 국가에요. 게다가 한국의 대학원 졸업시스템은 분야에서 권위 있는 교수님과 학생과의 긴밀한 네트워크로 이루어져 있다는 거예요. 제 전공을 지도하는 신지태 교수님과 같이 대부분 교수님들은 미국의 명문대학교를 졸업하고 연구 논문을 출판하는 데 뜨거운 열정을 지니신 분들입니다.” 그는 이어서 한국에 대한 긍정적인 인상을 말해주었다. “한국은 선진국입니다. 거리가 깨끗하고, 대중교통 시스템이 편리합니다. 한국인들도 굉장히 예의바르고 친근하죠. 회, 삼계탕, 냉면 같은 한국음식뿐만 아니라 한국 드라마도 제가 굉장히 좋아합니다.”

먼 타지에서의 유학이 항상 편하기만한 생활은 아닐 것이다. 한국에서 불편했던 점은 없을까? "언어는 언제나 첫번째 장벽이에요. 캠퍼스안에만 있으면 상관없죠. 한국인 친구들이 영어를 매우 잘하니까요. 하지만 캠퍼스 밖이라면 이야기가 달라집니다. 우리는 집을 렌트하고 계약을 맺고 의료보험증을 발행할때 굉장히 힘들었어요. 그때 제 친구들이 정보를 많이 나눠줬습니다. 제 베트남학생연합친구들과 IOA 사무실 한국인 친구들에게 감사의 말을 전하고 싶어요. 놀라운 것은 제 실험실 동기가 매우 부지런하다는 거예요. 그들은 연구를 위해서 늦은밤까지 실험실에 남아있거나 주말에도 실험실에 출근하기도 하죠. 제가 베트남에 있었을 때는 귀가를 일찍하는 편이었는데, 제 동기들 덕분에 열심히 일하는 걸 한 수 배웠습니다. 지금은 이제 제 친구들보다 더 늦게 귀가하고 있죠.“

유학생의 이야기를 들을때는 역시 양 나라간의 문화적 차이를 빼놓을 수 없다. 얕게 생각해보았을 땐 한국과 베트남은 다른 문화를 가지고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 하지만 후에 이어지는 그의 생각은 그렇지 않다고 말한다. "한국과 베트남이 제일 다른 것은 역시 기후겠지요? 베트남에선 눈이 내리지 않지만 한국은 겨울에 눈이 많이 오고 매우 춥습니다. 열대기후를 가진 호치민시에서 살았기 때문에 두꺼운 옷들을 입고 히터를 장만한 것은 매우 신기한 경험이에요. 그리고 식문화가 다르네요. 베트남 사람들은 뜨거운 음식을 좋아하고 날생선은 먹지 않습니다. 한국에서 먹는 '회'와 '냉면'을 사랑하기 위해 제 시각을 많이 바꿨습니다. 비슷한 점은, 베트남에서도 선생님이나 교수님들을 향해 존경과 예의를 갖춘다는 거예요. 하지만 이런 관계는 한국에서 더욱 더 강하게 나타나는 것 같습니다."

푹은 한국과 베트남 간의 문화적 차이가 그렇게 극단적으로 다르지 않다고 보았다. "저는 문화적 차이로 인해서 인상 깊은 경험을 해본적은 딱히 없는 것 같아요. 한국은 베트남과 매우 가깝습니다. 지리적으로나 문화적으로나요. 동아시아로서 우리들은 많은 공통속성을 공유하고 있어요. 젓가락을 사용한다던가, 쌀을 주식으로 삼는다는 것. 정월대보름날 치르는 문화행사라던지, 새해맞이 명절을 가지는 것들이 비슷한 문화권임을 말해주고 있죠. 심지어 베트남과 한국 사이에서는 비슷한 단어나 음식들도 많습니다. 음식의 경우, 김치나 막걸리와 비슷한 음식들이 베트남에도 있거든요."

인터뷰를 하면서 그가 한국문화를 접하고 사랑하는 것을 알 수 있었다. “한국문화와 관련된 행사도 많이 참여했습니다. 정보통신대학원이 주최했던 ‘수원 화성(華城)둘러보기 여행’을 정말 재밌게 즐겼었죠. 오래된 성에서 볼 수 있었던 한국의 미술색채나 왕족들의 생활양식이 매우 인상 깊었어요. 한국의 전통침술을 경험하고, 차를 마시는 경험을 했습니다. 침술을 맞을 때는 거의 잠들 뻔 했고, 차를 마실 때의 예법들을 배웠습니다. 템플스테이는 또 다른 굉장한 경험이었어요. 신선한 공기와 채소 그리고 의미있는 음식들을 먹을 뿐만 아니라 불교에서 베트남과 한국의 ‘부처’가 다르다는 것을 경험했기때문이죠.”

연구자라는 신분에서 벗어나면 푹은 2가지 역할을 하고 있다 : 첫 째는 성균관대학교 내에서 유학하는 '베트남 학생 연합(Vietnamese Student Association)'-규모 100명 이상-의 대표이며, 둘 째는 한국에서 유학하는 '베트남인 학생 연합(Vietnamese Student Association)'-규모 5,000명 이상-의 부회장이라는 것이다. 그가 전하고자 하는 바는 다음과 같다.

" 'For a better campus life!'는 저희 베트남학생연합이 가장 좋아하는 슬로건입니다. 우리는 베트남에서 유학온 신입생들이 처음 한국에 왔을 때 편리한 생활을 할 수 있도록 도와주고 있죠. 예를 들어 수강신청, 의료시스템 정착, 부동산관련 정보들을 제공하고 있어요. 뿐만 아니라 스포츠클럽이나 문화 행사를 만들고, 라디오 채널을 운용해 다른 학생들과 감정소통하는 것을 주도하고 있죠."

학생연합의 대표로서 저는 베트남 학생들이 과학과 기술 분야에 긴밀한 관심을 가지도록 이끄는 책임이 있습니다. 양질의 지식과 비전은 미래에 과학기술 커뮤니티를 성장시키는 데 큰 도움이 될 겁니다. 가까운 훗날에 우리는 한국에서 베트남 학생들과 연구결과를 나누고 연구 커뮤니티를 강화시킬 수 있는 컨퍼런스를 개최할 예정이에요. 특히, 요즘 시대에 양 나라간의 사업 교류가 활발해지고 있습니다. 예를 들면 삼성이나 LG같은 한국 회사들이 베트남에 진출하는것 처럼요. 저는 베트남과 한국의 기술교류에 있어 다리의 역할을 하고 싶은 것이 바람입니다. 양국의 관계를 강화시킬 뿐만 아니라 한국의 세계적인 기업에서 일할 수 있는 기회를 주기 때문입니다."

"개인적인 목표는 제 커리어에 도움이 되는 좋은 지식과 기술을 갈고 닦는 것 그리고 미래에 긍정적인 결과를 낳을 활동을 많이 하는 겁니다. 예컨대 저보다 어린 세대들에게 학위정보, 학교정보, 좋은 교수님이 어떤 분인지, 협회에 가입하는 방법 등을 전달함으로써 돕고 싶습니다."

“또한 이 자리를 빌어 삶의 목표와 모든 행사를 같이 하는 나의 친구 Nguyễn Cảnh Thướng에게 감사의 인사를 전하고 싶습니다.”

'성균관대학교 베트남학생연합(Vietnamese Student Association in Sungkyunkwan- SKKUVN)'은 국내에서 가장 큰 '베트남학생연합(Vietnamese Student Association in Korea- VSAK)'중 하나이다. 2006년에 설립한 이래로 우리학교 내 두 번째로 큰 국제 커뮤니티인 SKKUVN은 VSAK과 함께 베트남 유학생들과 성균관대학교 국제 사무행사를 연결해주는 다리 역할을 수행한다. 또한 유학생들에게 스포츠 행사나 섣달그믐날 학교에서 주최하는 행사들에 참여하도록 격려해왔으며, 긴 학업시간 후 찾아오는 스트레스를 줄이기 위한 많은 행사들을 기획해왔다. 다음은 정기적으로 주최하는 행사목록이다.

Mr. Châu Minh Phúc is majoring in Electrical and Computer Sciences at College of Information and Communication Engineering. He was born and raised in Tra Vinh province, a small town with avenue of trees, plenty of fruits and veggies. Phúc has been decided to be PhD candidate in technology major at SKKU. Additionally, he is also interested in a variety of extracurricular activities not only in research but also in Vietnamese Student Community in Korea. He is currently in charge of representative of Vietnamese Student Association at SKKU and Vice President of Vietnamese Student Association in Korea with more than 5,000 students. Taking in charge of important position in community is not an easy story. Where does his enthusiasm come from? We will find out his school life in the following interview.

Phúc is studying in natural campus. What is the actual reason for selecting the Engineering and Computer Science? “I had definitely thought about my goals and future accomplishments before coming to Korea. I’ve always been good at crunching numbers, mathematic, statistical analysis and especially the strong interest in wireless technology. When I was a child, remote control toy car attracted me as the first sight. I was really interested in the way of controlling a toy car without any wired connection. That is the reason for being PhD candidate in College of Information and Communication. So, I’m majoring in wireless communication and researching on 5G wireless technology, which is opening the new present age of communication technology.”

Phúc evidently shows his interest in “wireless communication” among many students who are studying in electrical technology. We are curious about the influence of his interest to his current major. “I knew that selecting the wireless communication major was the right decision. My current research teaches me about the beauty of science in digital communication and information system. It’s amazing when the communication technology have profoundly changed our daily lives every day. People are more easily, creatively and effectively using the technology in work life and social life.”

He has been living in Korea for two and a half years. We will discover how he adapts to Korea life and how much of adaptation has been completed during two and a half years. “It’s so hard to answer since there are many impressive experiences in Korea such as public transportation in Seoul, nature within city borders, many kinds of food within one meal and ppalli-ppalli (빨리빨리) culture etc… The first impression is probably service in Korea. You will eventually experience the actual word “service” as living in Korea. For example, if you are unsatisfied about the service in restaurant, and you can complain to restaurant owner and receive apology with discount from owner. I spend almost of time for studying course work and doing research. On the free time, I try to learn Korean language and culture understanding. Besides, joining social activities in Vietnamese Community in Korea have gained me many different skills such as team work, event organizing and soft skills.

There are many attractive places in Seoul where I had many good experiences with my friends such as Namsan Tower, Namdaemun Market, Dongdaemun Market etc… It’s amazing as living in country with four seasons. We can enjoy one beautiful place with four different feelings.”

He is experiencing an amazing life in Korea. Phúc has strong enthusiasm for his motherland, so what is his reason for studying in Korea? “I had been studied very hard to pursuit my dream of study abroad in developed country like American, EU, Japan and Korea. But Korea was my final decision since not all developed countries have such impressive economic, their own smartphone products, premium motor brand, many top companies over the world. Korea is also leading country in contribution to the world knowledge with many prestigious journals, and patents. Inaddition, Korea’s graduate system is powered by a network of strong profiles professor (as my Prof. Jitae Shin and especially in my major of wireless communication) which almost graduated from well-known university in USA and extremely enthusiasm in publishing research papers.” He also shares his active impressions about Korea as follows. “Korea is very well developed country. The street is very clean, the convenient transport system, and Korean is very polite and friendly. I do love Korean food (“hue”, and “samkethang”, “cold noodle”), and Korean drama.”

Daily lives are definitely not as comfortable as at home when studying abroad. What are your uncomfortable experiences? “Language is always the first barrier. It will be fine if you stay inside the campus. Your Korean friends can speak English very well. Outside campus is totally different story. We have so difficult time in finding renting house, house contract, health care document, etc... Thanks to my great Vietnamese Student Community by sharing information, experience as well help from my dear Korean friends and IOA office. I am a bit surprise at first since our labmates are very hard working. They stay very late to do research at night or event weekend. I often go home earlier in my country. But I have learned how to work hard from them and now I even go home after my friends.”

The difference about culture between two countries must be discussed in the story of this foreign student. It is easy to see that there exists the difference between two countries. But Phúc said his thought has been changed afterward. The first difference is probably the weather. “There is no snow in my country but Korea has a lot and very cold in the winter. I live in the Ho Chi Minh City with tropical climate, living in thick clothes and heater is my interesting experience.” Additional, food is second different thing. “Vietnamese people prefer hot food and do not eat much raw fish. I did change my view to love Korean food such as “hue” and “cold noodle”. On another hand, the similarity is respect, politeness and reason. “We do pay a lot of respect to our teachers and professors. This relationship, however, is much stronger in Korea.”

Phúc think that there are no impressive experiences from cultural difference. “I don’t have any impressive experiences from cultural difference. Korea is closed to Vietnam in both geography and culture. As East Asia countries, we share a lot of common things: both using chopstick, eating rice as main food, the traditional event in the full moon, lunar new year etc… We even have many similar words or similar foods like Kimchi, Macolli in Vietnam.”

Through the interview, we experience his love for Korean culture. “I joined several cross cultural awareness programs. For example, I really enjoyed the CICE trips to Suwon old Palace which gave me very impressive look on Korean material art, the old living style of the royal family. Experiencing the Korean traditional acupuncture, enjoying the drinking tea. I was almost slept during the acupuncturing and did learn many rules in drinking tea. Temple stay is another great experience with fresh air, fresh vegetable and understand the valuable of food as well as experiencing the difference in Buda religion between the two countries.”

Apart from researching in school, he is currently in charge of two positions: representative of Vietnamese Student Association in SKKU (more than 100 members) and vice president of Vietnamese Student Association in Korea (more than 5,000 members). His goal is: ““For a better campus life” is our favorite slogan in community. We intend to do anything for the community to make the easy life for new comers as they study abroad. We try to help Vietnamese students for daily life problem such as coursework registration, health care, housing information, as well as organizing sport and culture events and operating a radio channel for students to express and sharing their emotion. For Vietnamese Student Association in Korea, I’m responsible for developing the connection among Vietnamese students in science and technology. I hope that the good knowledge and vision will lead us to the future in developing the big and strong connectivity in science and technology community. In the near future, we also plan to host a conference for Vietnamese students in sharing their research, and strengthen researcher communities in Korea. Especially, nowadays, there are increasingly business activities between thetwo countries with many Korea Companies coming to Vietnam like Samsung, LG etc… I would like to be a part of this process as bridge to connect Vietnam and Korea through technology transfer, to strengthen our relationship as well as to give me a chance to work in good international company. For personal point of view, I will prepare good knowledge, skill which helpful for my carrier, do something that would leave good impact for the future. For example, I would help the younger generation by provide them better information (e.g. scholarship, which school, which professor etc…), guild (e.g. how to apply, how to prepare etc…). Last but not least, I would like to say thanks to my friend Nguyễn Cảnh Thướng who is always be with me in all activities and goal in life.”

Like SKKU University, Vietnamese Student Association in Sungkyunkwan (SKKUVN) is also one of the best Vietnamese Student Association in Korea (VSAK). Founded in 2006, as a second biggest international community in SKKU, SKKUVN plays very important role as a bridge between Vietnamese student with SKKU international Office Affair as well as VSAK. It has promoted Vietnamese to attend our university events (e.g. Sport festival and Welcome Lunar New Year Eve.) and created many activities for Vietnamese students to reduce the stress after long working days.
